Student teams will participate in 3 exciting team events accumulating points for each event which will determine the finishing order. The first event will focus on VMware Sales Certification where teams will get points for completing the VMware Virtualization Jumpstart Training. The second event will focus on platform scenarios with the goal of producing a 3-5 year roadmap maximizing their business value while factoring in proper ROI and architectures with consideration for the current virtualization trends.

Note: At least one team member must be present on April 10.

Event Description:

By Wednesday, March 10 student teams will be provided with the Virtualization Optimization and Modeling scenarios that will contain:

  • VMware Virtualization Jumpstart Training
  • Overview of the current technical platforms
  • Business considerations for the change
  • Technical and Financial assumptions
  • Target audience
  • Virtual Platforms - creation and expectations
  • Implementation timelines
  • Rules and expectations for spot development
  • Email address for sending any questions

NOTE: Prior to receiving the packet all team members and sponsoring faculty will need to sign a document indicating that all provided materials and the resulting product are the property of Avnet and cannot be reused for any other purposes.

A 60-minute conference call will be scheduled for 9 a.m. (Arizona time), Wednesday, March 10 and will be open for all teams to attend. Student teams will have an opportunity to obtain further information on the VMware Virtualization Jumpstart Training, platform virtualization modeling and creation of the virtual environment requirements. Students should be ready to ask questions that will help refine what the program 'really' wants out of this actionable plan. Students will also have the option to ask further questions via email and will have a contact at Avnet that will field those questions. (Email questions will no longer be accepted after April 2, 2010.)

On the event day teams will select a spokesperson who will take no more than 20 minutes to pitch their solution to Avnet and the event judges. Judges will evaluate the presentations and the recommendations not only on technical quality, but also on how well the students were able to understand and address the requirements and expectations. The final report and presentations must be presented in soft copy with optional hard copy deliverables to the judging panel. All copyright laws and proprietary materials must be adhered.

The winning team will have an opportunity to intern at Avnet with a live client virtualization consulting project.

Parameters:

End product must include:

  • VMware Virtualization Jumpstart Training
  • Final report to cover technical, architectural and financial areas
  • Convey the message, provide compelling reason for someone to buy the product, call to action
  • Have a business valuation behind the recommended solution
  • Can be platform independent
  • Have a fully disclosed financial model
  • Provide a full WBS on the activities and how the project was managed

Schedule:

  • 7 a.m. - 8 a.m. - Registration
  • 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. - Team representatives present their solutions (Judging first 9 teams)
  • 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. - Judging Break - lunch
  • 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. - Team representatives present their solutions (Judging remaining 3 teams)
  • 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. - Judges calculate scores and identify winning team
  • 3 p.m. - 4 p.m. - Network Hour (Student/Faculty/Administration/Industry)
  • 4 p.m. - 5 p.m. - Awards Reception

Equipment Requirements for Students:

  • Final report and final presentation - memory stick and optional printed materials

Equipment Requirements for Venue:

  • Overhead projector
  • Room with tables/computers/monitors/internet access
