Spring 2012 Patch Panel Madness
Students will quickly and efficiently build a working data network using provided network diagram, cabling, patch panels, switches and racks. The game demonstrates the student team’s understanding of data networking and cabling skills.

NOTE: Teams with one or more team member that has previously participated in this game (ATG 2008, 2009 or 2010) will have a 2 minute penalty applied to their score. Secondly, previous participants must have registered prior to game day, i.e. walk-ins for teams consisting of one or more previous participants will not be accepted on game day.

Event Description
Student teams will be provided with a rack consisting of multiple patch panels and switches; cabling of various colors and lengths; and a conceptual network description indicating the required network configuration. Students will review the conceptual network diagram and will then have a maximum of 30 minutes to cable to the specified design. (The 30 minutes includes the review of the conceptual design document.)
The criteria to be used for this game will be:
- Time to complete the design
- Efficiency of the design layout, i.e. for supportability
- Completeness of the design, i.e. does it match the needs indicated in the conceptual network diagram
Parameters
- Access to the network diagram exercise and the cabling environment will only be provided when the team competes on game day.
- Students will have a maximum of 30 minutes to complete the exercise. There will be 15 minutes for review by the judges and tear-down.
- Teams that have not yet competed cannot watch other competitors.
- Teams with one or more team member that has previously participated in this game will have a 2 minute penalty applied to their score.
Eqiupment Needed
Students
- No equipment needs to be provided by students.

- Two racks (to run two games simultaneously).
- Six 24-port switches

- Patch cables (Mixture of at least 40 cables in the following colors: blue, red, green, orange, and purple)
